Dysport® or Xeomin®?

Make It Stand Out.

The facial expressions we make every day can lead to wrinkles over time, especially as we age. So what if we want to minimize our wrinkles? Let's talk neurotoxins, specifically Botulinum toxin A. By injecting neurotoxins directly into wrinkles, we can block muscle nerve impulses and cause them to relax, leaving you with fewer wrinkles and a refreshed, youthful appearance.

The two brands we use in our office are Dysport®, which was FDA approved in 2009, and Xeomin®, which was approved for use in the U.S. in 2011. Both brands of Botulinum toxin A are effective for reducing wrinkles around the eyes, forehead, glabella (between the eyebrows), and can also be used to treat excessive sweating and even migraine headaches.

So what are the main differences between the two brands of neurotoxins we use at Bare Skin Beauty and Aesthetics? We're glad you asked!

Dysport® and Xeomin® both contain Botulinum toxin A and are safe to use on all skin types and complexions. Both treat fine lines and wrinkles in the injection site with few negative side effects and last for about three to four months on average, with some patients enjoying wrinkle-free results for up to six months before facial lines start to reappear naturally. Patients who are extremely active or have a high metabolism may notice results wear off quicker. The main differences between the two are how many units of each are used and how quickly results can take effect.

Dysport® tends to have more spread after injection, making it ideal for areas such as crow’s feet, and the effects can be seen in 2-3 days.

Xeomin® is called the “naked” injectable since it does not contain any accompanying proteins, pure Botulinum toxin A. Different from Dysport®, which includes another protein, patients who use neurotoxins over time may develop antibodies to those proteins. Because Xeomin® doesn't use an additional protein, patients find they do not have to continually increase their dosage to get the same or similar results and have less risk of developing a resistance to the toxin.

Most patients notice little to no difference between Dysport® and Xeomin® once they are injected, but there are reasons to choose one brand over another. Schedule a consultation with Whitney today to discuss which neurotoxin is right for you and your beauty goals!
